Implementation

Developing a CHAS is only the first step—successful coastal adaptation requires turning strategies into action.

Once a CHAS has been developed, it must then be approved or endorsed by the respective councils before it can be integrated into their local planning frameworks and operations to ensure effective implementation of adaptation measures. The allocation of capital and operational budget and funding (when required) is then crucial for the successful delivery of identified adaptation works.

The QCoast2100 program has provided significant financial support to help councils transition from strategic planning to on-ground adaptation projects. Through this program, councils are delivering a wide variety of implementation projects that incorporate practical, local solutions designed to make our coastlines stronger and safer.

Different project types include hard infrastructure, nature-based strategies, and planning tools; reflecting the flexibility of this funding to support localised adaptation needs. Examples include:

  • Restoring natural defences like dune management, revegetation and mangrove expansion
  • Building protective infrastructure such as seawalls or drainage systems
  • Shoreline Erosion Management Plan development and delivering identified actions
  • Supporting communities through educational activities and awareness programs

Every project is based on research, input from local communities, and a long-term view to ensure Queensland’s coast is protected not just for today, but for future generations.

QCoast2100 is now up to it’s third round of funding to support implementation actions identified in a councils CHAS. To date, the program has funded 43 implementation projects across 20 different councils.
